The 12th FINA World Championships will be held in Melbourne from 17 March to 1 April 2007. The Championships are one of the biggest international sporting events with an estimated 2000 athletes from as many as 175 countries expected to compete.
The Championships will also symbolize a historic occasion for Melbourne which will become the first city to host the Olympic Games (1956), the Commonwealth Games (2006) and the FINA World Championships (2007).
Athletes will compete in the five aquatics disciplines at the Championships – Swimming, Open Water Swimming, Diving, Water Polo and Synchronised Swimming – with some of the biggest names in world sport expected to be in Melbourne next year.
Three venues will be used for the Championships, with the water polo competition and the diving program to be held at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre; the Open Water Swimming Events will be held at St Kilda Beach; and the Swimming and Synchronised Swimming programs will be held in Rod Laver Arena (RLA) at Melbourne Olympic Park.
In what is sure to provide a thrilling spectacle, a temporary 50-metre swimming pool will be installed at RLA for the Championships.
The Championships are expected to attract a global television audience of one billion viewers and an estimated 12 000 overseas visitors are expected to travel to Melbourne during the two weeks of the Championships.
